Oliveira is known scientifically as Olea europaea L., family Oleaceae. They are trees native to the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. From its fruits, the olives, the men at the end of the Neolithic period learned to extract the olive oil. This oil was employed as ointment, fuel or in feed, and by all these utilities, it became a tree venerated by several people. The Minoan civilization, which flourished on the island of Crete until 1500 BC, prospered with the olive oil trade, which they first learned to cultivate. Already the Greeks, who possibly inherited the techniques of cultivation of the Olive tree of the Minóicos, associated the tree to the force and to the life. The olive tree is also quoted in the Bible in several passages, both the tree and its products.
