Description:

Ipecac, scientific name Cephaelis ipecacuanha , is a shrub plant belonging to the Rubiaceae family. It can also be known as ipecacuanha, cagosanga, cinnamon-de-menor, cipó-emético, ipê-caa-coene, ipecapoaie, gray poiaia, among others.

There are, however, many species of this plant, and the one that has the most qualities for alternative medicine is the one we mentioned in this article (Cephaelis ipecacuanha). Its name has indigenous origin, and is native to the Brazilian forests, although it is currently also cultivated in India and Malaysia. The root can reach approximately 40 centimeters. Its parts used for medicinal purposes are crushed roots powder.

Health benefits:

It can be used in the treatment of intoxication when gastric lavage cannot be done because it acts in emptying of the stomach. And in the treatment of dysentery, bronchitis, acute cough and whooping cough. Its use is also beneficial in the treatment of diseases of the respiratory system, such as lung and bronchial diseases. It stimulates gastric systems, low fever and prevents the formation of cysts.

Directions:

  1. Put 2 tbsp to a quart of water
  2. Let it cook for about 10 minutes from the moment it starts to boil

Contraindications:

Ipecacuanha is contraindicated for children under 6 months of age during pregnancy or when a person has ingested kerosene, gasoline or acid or alkaline corrosive agents. Because it is a toxic medicinal plant, it should only be used under medical advice.

Consumption is contraindicated when in high doses, as they become toxic. The dust is irritating to the skin and therefore can cause dermatitis and asthma to those who have frequent contact with the plant.

In case of overdose, seek medical advice. The symptoms are convulsions, shock, coma, impaired respiratory function, arrhythmia, tachycardia, blood pressure drop, mucosal erosion of the gastrointestinal tract, diarrhea, severe vomiting, among others.
